Do you have diabetes or care for someone who does? Has your physician mentioned your blood sugar levels being too high? The Health and Wellness Center, located in Indiana Government Center South, is here to help you learn more about this disease and enable you to take control of your health.

Staff from the Health and Wellness Center are on hand Monday, Dec. 1 in the IGC-S Auditorium to provide information on diabetes, symptoms, risk factors, consequences and treatment. Dr. Michael Kane, Dr. Almitra Thomas and Registered Dietician Jenna McClean are presenting at 11 a.m. and noon. Each session includes a 45 minute presentation and 15 minute meet and greet with the presenters. Topics being covered include:

What is Diabetes:

  • Type 2 DM definition
  • Prevalence/lifetime risk
  • Lab indicators if increasing risk

Diabetes Symptoms and Risk Factors:

  • Clinical risk factors increasing risk: family history, ethnicity, obesity
  • Lifestyle factors increasing risk: exercise, smoking, sleep duration and quality

The Consequences

  • The potential consequences of diabetes including heart disease, stroke, vascular complications, vision issues, etc.

Controlling Diabetes

  • Medications
  • Dietary patterns increasing risk: Western diet, sugar sweetened beverages, Vitamin D deficiency, selenium deficiency, iron intake, chromium deficiency, monitoring carbohydrates
  • Reducing Risk: Mediterranean diet, dairy, nuts, whole grains, fruit, coffee
