Tony’s ‘aha!’ moment

Health coach helps INDOT engineer reach wellness goals

Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) senior hydraulics engineer Tony Cox is making great strides on his personal wellness journey, so much so that he recently had what he calls an “ah-ha” moment.

It’s all coming together for Tony as he works to meet his personal health goals with the assistance of a health coach. My name is Tony, and I would like to tell you about an “aha” moment that I had with the help of my ActiveHealth Coach, Sarah Anderson, that has led me to great success in my get-healthy and weight loss adventure.

I was motivated to lose some weight and thought that trying out a health coach might be worth looking into.  A couple of friends from the office recommended it and I gave it a shot.

During my initial call with my health coach, I had mentioned my previous experiences and failures with losing weight.  I would tend to set a goal of something like eating less than 1,500 to 1,800 calories every day, while working out one to two times every day. 

But, inevitably, I would not meet [that goal] one or two days and feel like I had failed, which made it harder to stay motivated.  Sarah suggested setting a goal that gives you some room for mess-ups, which won’t lead to a feeling of failure. This has been CRITICAL for me during my current adventure of being healthier (while losing weight).

So my goal has been to ride a bike and eat less than 1,900 calories a day for five days a week — that way, if I messed up, I wouldn’t have that immediate failure feeling. This has been very critical to me not losing my motivation.

Since we started, I have lost more than 25 pounds and as a result, my health screening results were the best they have been in over a decade!  As a fun thing to do, I grabbed a 25-pound dumbbell and handed it to my son.  After looking at me like I was crazy, I pointed to it and said, “That is how much weight I’ve lost.”
