New and healthy options from Fresh Seasons Café

On Monday, February 3, 2014 the Indiana Government Center welcomed a new cafeteria food service vendor, Taher, Inc . Taher prides themselves in expert food-service management and has been providing fresh food options to many organizations since 1981. Some of the changes that Taher made to the Government Center cafeterias include healthier menu options, a new Fresh Mex and Pizza station in the South Café, a new Freshwich Station in the North Café, and Taher’s Chef Council who has traveled the world and just recently returned from Sicily with innovative ideas and new recipes. Taher’s General Manager, Fred Cochran, was kind enough to answer some questions for us about Fresh Seasons Café’s first two months with the Government Center.

What goals did you and Taher have for the Government Center’s cafeteria?

First and foremost, we wanted to improve the overall quality of the dining experience for Indiana State employees and their visitors by offering restaurant quality, fresh, wholesome food at reasonable prices. This is a fantastic facility and I’m excited to be a part of this team. There’s a certain degree of energy and vitality that is created in the kitchen. We hope you feel it, too!

How have you made the cafeteria choices healthier?

Anytime a person can eat something made from fresh, wholesome ingredients rather than meals packed with preservatives and sodium, we’ve just created an opportunity to help someone make a healthier food choice. Taher’s Chef Council is the backbone of our chef-driven organization. The global marketplace is our inspiration for incredible recipes and solutions to some health-related issues. Last year, the Chef Council visited Israel to learn more about the Mediterranean diet. These experiences arm our chefs with information and ideas that we bring to your cafeteria.

What other changes or programs has Taher implemented?

We got rid of all the Styrofoam to increase the overall sustainability of the cafeteria; it’s really about not wasting our valuable resources and finding new ways to accomplish the same task. At Taher, we’re promoting the use of reusable china, coffee mugs, and soda cups when possible.

We continually strive to educate people about nutrition and offer foods to support good health. Our Harvest of the Month program is just one of many great examples of how we introduce new tastes, textures, and flavors into people’s diets. We will always offer vegetarian entrees and can offer guidance to those needing to follow special diets for cultural, religious, or dietary reasons.

Anything additional you’d like State employees to know about the new Fresh Seasons Café?

We love being here! We think the State of Indiana is a great place to live and work. We welcome your input and recognize that we are here as your guests. Let us know how we’re doing. We enjoy interacting with you, learning who you are and what you like. Ultimately, Taher is here to serve you.
